Everyone knows that Big Business has great representation in Madison – it’s the everyday people of Wisconsin that need it. I am running for Assembly to bring your voice back to Madison. I will put People First and represent the citizens of Wisconsin.
I spend a lot of time talking to people and the most common observation I hear from them about our current elected representation in Madison is that we the people are not being represented but Big Business is.
This article popped up in the news today and it perfectly illustrates that point: https://tinyurl.com/y9o7n96z
To summarize, the lobbying group Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce wrote a last-minute amendment to a coronavirus relief package that severely and negatively impacts the ability of our EMTs, our police officers, and our firefighters to qualify for workers' compensation if they contract COVID-19 while on the job. Essentially, if they contract the virus, they have to prove that they were exposed to a person who is confirmed to have COVID-19 or else they get nothing. Nothing. They kicked our first responders to the curb during an international pandemic. The amendment passed down party lines, all Republicans voting “for” and all Democrats voting “against”.
To add insult to injury, one member of the Assembly admitted he didn’t know what he was voting on. He simply voted “yes” based on orders from the Party leaders and a month later learned what was in the amendment and found it to be “deeply disturbing”.
From the article: “Tucked into it was a measure written by business lobbying group Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce affecting when police officers who contract coronavirus can qualify for workers' compensation.”
“The incident offers a peek at how legislating sometimes occurs in Madison, with lawmakers casting votes based on what leaders tell them without looking into the details themselves.”
If you’re like me, you’re wondering why a lobby group is writing our legislation and why our elected Republican legislators are putting that group’s Wants in front of our citizens' Needs.
This is unacceptable. Everyone knows that Big Business has great representation in Madison – it’s the everyday people of Wisconsin that need it. I am running for Assembly to bring your voice back to Madison. I will put People First and represent the citizens of Wisconsin.
